EXCLUSIVE

Another year draws quickly to a close, and we rush like mad little elves to ship the last EX issue out the door so that we can hopefully enjoy a bit of the holidays too. If your holidays are anything like ours, it's a mad rush of work, socializing, and trying to get all those "holiday" things squeezed in between the parties and the deadlines and the trips to the post office.
While we can't mail your Christmas cards for you or come over to your house and help with the Christmas goose, we can offer some advice as to what to get the anime fans in your life. Stumped for gift ideas? Not sure if the SAILOR MOON Chopsticks are really what he wants? Here, at last, we can offer some hopefully helpful suggestions to make the holiday shopping a little less painful.
Once again, members of the EX staff offer their suggestions as to what to get others (or what you might be interested in for yourself) this holiday season. There seems to be a fair amount of consensus in some categories, but in others a wide variety of selections exist. And where else can you find CATNAPPED side by side with PERFECT BLUE on a recommendation list?

First up: Anime!

Cowboy Bebop

Perfect Blue

Ghost in the Shell

Shoujo Kakumei Utena

End of Evangelion

Charles McCarter: To say I haven't had much time to watch anything new lately would be putting it mildly, but I'd have to say that COWBOY BEBOP gets my vote. It's smart, funny, and there is a lot going on. Plus, Ein is so amusing it always makes me laugh. If you want domestic releases, however, then I'd have to say that AnimeVillage.com's ESCAFLOWNE will please even the most jaded anime fan.

Keith Rhee: PERFECT BLUE (import LD). One of the most captivating thrillers made to date in anime, PERFECT BLUE will keep you guessing until the stunning conclusion. Its portrayal of fanboys in Japan is worth particular notice, and proof that an "otaku" is not something one should aspire to live up to.

Scott Frazier: Buy them DVD disks! Make them convert! Start with GHOST IN THE SHELL and the CARD CAPTOR SAKURA set. As for me, BOBBY NI KUBITTAKE LD. (Somebody put it out on DVD!) or MAMA WA SHOGAKKO YONNENSEI on DVD. Somebody tell Bandai to get on the ball.

Mark Johnson: This has to be BANIPAL WITT (also known as CATNAPPED! in North America). When I first saw this a few years ago at Anime Expo, I was hooked. It's a family-oriented adventure where two children get kidnapped by cats from another world in order to save it. And finally after all these years, it's finally been released onto LD (and soon to be on video in December).

Roderick Lee: AH! MEGAMISAMA TV. It's A!MG. It's super-deformed Belldandy. It's cute! And it's on Japanese satellite TV only, which means it is impossible to find!

Ivevei Upatkoon: SHOUJO KAKUMEI UTENA. This TV series ended its run in Japan a while ago, so it might be old news to most of you. Still, it's one of the weirdest, deepest things I've seen. Tightly directed, almost perfectly planned and executed. EVA got the hype, but UTENA is the one to deliver. We'll see how the movie turns out next year. Available domestically in the US through CPM.

Eric "Scanner" Luce: PERFECT BLUE. This anime was released early in 1998. It has just been released on LD and a second box will be released in December. If you want a mental thriller that keeps you wondering who is who and what is happening then this movie is for you. Not for the faint of heart!

Eugene Moon: PERFECT BLUE. A disturbing film, and a good one. You may not quite understand everything that went on after you've seen it, but in this case that's a good thing.

Maria Rider: What a lot of fans have been waiting for... the fabled EVANGELION MOVIE LD BOX. The box contains both the EVANGELION: DEATH AND REBIRTH and END OF EVANGELION movies. Let's hope this is the last LDs we'll have to sink our money into!

Rika Takahashi: I would have to say COWBOY BEBOP for the "moving" stuff. Mokona up above knows that is one of the things I asked (and am getting) for Christmas this year! Session 1 LD with the first 3 episodes is out 12/18! And those looking for a domestic version should like the fact that AnimeVillage.com will be releasing them next June.
